Maximalism 1, 2, 3

Maximalism has been round for some time but it is ramping up for 2025 and is a key design theme we are seeing coming through in fabrics, wallpapers, new paint colours and embellishments.

Maximalism is all about embracing boldness, vibrancy, and personality in interior design - letting your personality shine forth.  It's the antithesis of minimalism, so you can go wild with colors, textures, and patterns!  Here are some tips and tricks to help you incorporate maximalism into your interiors:

1. Layer Colour

BOLD AND BRIGHT: Maximalism loves bold hues. You can mix rich jewel tones (emerald, ruby, sapphire) with more neutral bases or accent walls. Think saturated colors that make a statement.

PATTERN MIXING: Don’t be afraid to mix patterns like florals with stripes, chevrons with plaids, and geometric with abstract. Just make sure there’s some cohesion—whether it’s through color or style.

2. Eclectic Furniture

VINTAGE MEETS MODERN: Maximalism isn’t about being matchy-matchy. Combine different styles, such as a modern sofa with an antique coffee table or a mid-century chair next to a baroque mirror.

OVERSIZED PIECES: Go for larger furniture that has presence. Think oversized sofas or a massive statement chandelier. The furniture should feel like it fills the space and stands out.

3. Mixing Textures

LAYER DIFFERENT MATERIALS: Incorporate various textures like velvet, leather, silk, and linen all in one space. Throw in some metallics (gold, brass, silver) to add a luxurious feel.

RUGS AND CURTAINS: Use layered rugs, colorful curtains, and textured cushions to create depth and coziness.

4. Art and Decor

GALLERY WALLS: Fill your walls with a variety of art, photos, mirrors, and wall hangings. Mix mediums (paintings, photography, sculptures), but keep a similar color palette to prevent it from looking chaotic.

BIG ART PIECES: Don’t shy away from large, statement art pieces. They can help anchor the room while providing a visual focal point.

5. Statement Lighting

CHANDELIERS AND PENDANTS: Maximalist interiors thrive with eye-catching lighting fixtures. Think chandeliers with bold, unique designs, or oversized pendant lights.

MIX LIGHTING SOURCES: Layer your lighting with table lamps, sconces, and floor lamps to add ambiance and visual interest.

6. Personal and Quirky Details

PERSONAL DETAILS: Display your personal collections, whether it’s travel souvenirs, vintage finds, or unique sculptures. The more personal, the better.

UNEXPECTED TOUCHES: Introduce unexpected elements like animal print pillows, quirky sculptures, or bold color combinations that showcase your personality. Maximalism is not about clutter so edit your decor well.

7. Look Up And Down

MAXIMALIST CEILINGS: Don’t forget about the ceiling! Painted ceilings or a unique wallpaper can help extend the maximalist vibe throughout the room.

FLOORING: Patterned tiles, intricate rugs, or even bold paint choices for the floor can elevate the space.

8. Play With Scale

MIX LARGE AND SMALL ELEMENTS: Combine oversized pieces (like a giant mirror or massive bookshelf) with smaller accessories to create dynamic contrast.

PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS: It’s okay to have some furniture or decor items that seem slightly too big or too small for the space—this creates a fun, unexpected vibe.

Wanting to bring maximalism into your room?  We pulled together three different looks that concentrate on:

  1. A feature wallpaper (or two!)
  2. A feature fabric
  3. A lively rug
  4. Supporting complimentary fabrics - either textures, weaves or plains
  5. A saturated paint colour to tie it all together

Maximalism is all about celebrating individuality and creating a space that feels alive, warm, and full of character. The key is balance—while it’s about layers and exuberance, you don’t want it to feel overcrowded or cluttered. Keep the flow and energy in mind!  Most of all - have fun with it!
