The Weekly Edit

This week, our focus is on the kitchen, where we will delve into essential aspects of design.

We start by examining spacial design and layout, ensuring functionality and flow.

We also consider materials and colours that bring durability and style and explore lighting options that enhance both aesthetics and practicality.

1. Spacial Design

When designing a kitchen with an emphasis on spacial efficiency, maximising storage solutions is paramount. Incorporating features like deep drawers, pull-out shelves, and corner cabinets can significantly increase storage capacity.

Creating an easy flow involves strategically placing appliances and workspaces to facilitate smooth movement and efficiency. If you have the space, a butler’s pantry is a perfect option for enhancing storage and keeping the main kitchen uncluttered.

For those who enjoy entertaining, keeping the sink out of the kitchen island is a smart move. This not only maintains a cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing space by hiding dirty dishes but also allows the island to serve as a welcoming focal point for social gatherings and is perfect for serving, dining, and mingling with guests, ensuring the kitchen remains both functional and inviting.

2. Kitchen Palette

Choosing the right colours and materials in a kitchen is crucial for creating a cohesive and inviting space. Opt for a focal point, such as a bold splash-back or an eye-catching countertop, to draw attention and add personality.

It's important to keep the overall design simple and not too busy, as kitchens already have numerous appliances and fixtures that can overwhelm the space. Good flooring is essential for durability. Materials like hardwood, tile, or luxury vinyl provide a sturdy foundation that can withstand heavy foot traffic and spills.

Selecting a neutral or subtly textured flooring ensures it complements the overall design without competing with other elements, maintaining a balanced and harmonious kitchen environment.

 3. Bright Ideas

Proper lighting is paramount in a kitchen, influencing both functionality and ambiance. Task lighting, such as under-cabinet lights, ensures that work areas are well-illuminated for cooking and food preparation tasks. Ambient lighting, like recessed ceiling lights provide overall illumination.

Additionally, accent lighting, such as pendant lights over an island or LED strips highlighting architectural features, adds visual interest and personality to the kitchen.

By incorporating a variety of lighting types, you can achieve a well-balanced environment that meets all your needs. If you're seeking assistance with your kitchen design, whether it's optimising spatial layout, selecting colours, or planning lighting schemes, please reach out here.

4. Katy's Mini Edit

Loving for 2024

Although this is potentially a bit of a trend, I am loving fluted wood panels and wave flex timber used as a decorative feature in kitchens.

Design Tip

When designing your kitchen consider creating a “work triangle” between the oven, sink and fridge for efficient movement while cooking and entertaining.

Tips For June

Most people tend to slow down a bit in winter. Entertaining becomes less and cooking is best suited to a slow cooker so this is a great time to renovate your kitchen and get it ready for a magical kiwi summer.
