The Weekly Edit

This week, we’re diving into the world of fabric, inspired by our recent design day at Mainland Design Centre. With countless fabric options available, selecting the right one can be overwhelming.

While having an interior designer can be invaluable, we've compiled some useful tips to help you make an informed choice and find the perfect fabric for your space.

1. Intended Purpose

When choosing the right fabric, it’s essential to consider its intended purpose. For upholstery, you’ll want a durable fabric that can withstand daily use and potential spills.

Fabrics like heavy-duty cotton are great for high-traffic areas, while natural fibres and luxurious options like silk and velvet are best suited for less frequently used items. Assess whether the fabric’s durability aligns with your specific needs and lifestyle.

Additionally, think about how the fabric will fit into your daily life. Natural fabrics, silks, and velvets exude luxury but often require special care and maintenance. If you have kids or pets, opting for more practical, easy-to-clean fabrics might be a better choice.

Balancing style with functionality will help you select a fabric that enhances your space while meeting your practical requirements.

2. Tactile Textiles

When choosing fabrics for your space, colour, texture, and pattern are key elements to consider. Colour can set the tone for a room, with lighter shades creating a sense of openness and darker colours adding warmth and cosiness.

For textures, think about how you want the space to feel—soft, tactile fabrics like velvet can add luxury and comfort, while smoother materials like linen offer a more relaxed and casual vibe. Patterns can also influence the character of a room. Subtle patterns can add depth and interest without overwhelming the space, making them ideal for versatile applications. Bold patterns can act as a focal point or statement piece, bringing energy and personality to the room.

Balancing these elements ensures that the fabrics you choose will enhance your space and align with your overall design vision.

 3. The Right Rug

Choosing the right rug is essential for bringing a room together. Start by considering the size of your space and the layout of your furniture. A rug should anchor the room—larger rugs are ideal for open areas, while smaller rugs work well under the front legs of your furniture to create a balanced look.

Material and texture play a significant role too. In high-traffic areas, durable, low-pile rugs are a practical choice, while plush, high-pile rugs add a cosy touch to bedrooms and lounging spaces. Neutral tones offer versatility and can easily blend with various decor styles, whereas bold patterns can serve as a focal point and inject personality into the room.

Loving for 2024

At design day last week, I came across the cushion below with fabric from Liberty Fabric and I fell in love. This fabric is super thick and the colours and detail were just magic!

Design Tip

Opt for a rug that compliments your existing colour scheme but don’t be afraid to introduce a pattern or pop of colour to inject some personality and style into the space.
