The Weekly Edit

This week on the Weekly Edit, we dive into all things Kiwi kitchens!

From smart layouts that maximise efficiency and style, to choosing the perfect bench top material for entertaining, and selecting cabinetry that blends functionality with a touch of New Zealand flair.

Whether you're planning a full renovation or looking to refresh your space, these tips will help you create a kitchen that’s both practical and beautiful.

1. Smart Layout

A well-designed kitchen layout is the foundation of a functional space. It's worth considering whether a standing oven or a built-in tower oven works best for your cooking habits.

A tower oven keeps appliances at eye level and frees up space, while a standing oven adds a more traditional touch. Plan the positioning of your fridge, dishwasher, and microwave thoughtfully, so they form a seamless workflow. A triangle layout, where the fridge, oven, and sink are within easy reach, remains a popular choice for efficiency.

Another key element in modern Kiwi kitchens is the butler’s pantry. This hidden gem allows you to store small appliances, prep food, and keep the main kitchen area clutter-free. It’s the perfect solution for families who love to entertain, as it hides the mess while keeping everything accessible.

2. Bench-tops

Choosing the right bench top plays a key role in how your kitchen functions. Larger bench tops allow for ample prep space and can double as an entertaining area. It’s best to avoid placing the sink in the middle of an island, as dishes can quickly clutter up the space. Instead, reserve the island for serving food or casual dining, keeping the focus on socialising rather than clean-up.

When it comes to materials, there are plenty of options to suit both style and budget. Porcelain offers a sleek, sophisticated look, while engineered stone gives a durable, low-maintenance option perfect for busy families. Acrylic bench-tops are still popular and offer flexibility in design with a more budget-friendly price point.

The choice of material can influence the overall look of your kitchen, so consider both aesthetics and practicality.

 3. Cabinetry & Handles

Cabinetry is key to maximising storage. We love mixing and matching styles—whether it's a combination of drawers and cupboards or open shelving for displaying curated kitchenware.

Deep drawers are perfect for pots and pans, while a dedicated platter cupboard and spice drawers help keep the space organised. The look of your cabinetry is just as important as its functionality. When choosing colours and finishes, consider tones that reflect a natural, relaxed vibe.

Soft greys, whites, or earthy greens are popular in Kiwi kitchens, bringing the outdoors in. Handles can also be a design statement—sleek and modern for a minimalist look, or bold and decorative to add character. The right combination can make a huge difference in your kitchen’s overall feel.

Loving for 2024

I am really enjoying seeing some colour come back into the kitchen. For a while there it was just white on white and its nice to see some warmer tones, greys, green and blue hues making an appearance once more as well as statement bench-tops!

Design Tip

Adding strip lighting under your kitchen island or floating shelves is a fantastic way to create ambient lighting whilst highlighting key design features. It is a simple and affordable yet stylish way to add both depth and warmth to this space.
