How Scented Candles Can Improve Your Mood & Wellbeing

It's no secret - over the past few years we have been called inwards, spending more time indoors due to events slightly out of our control.  This has meant we've seen a huge rise in the awareness & importance of self-care rituals in our lives, one of which (and I think it is pretty important!) is making your space as comfortable as can be.  Your home should be your sanctuary - somewhere you feel safe, relaxed and at peace. 

Where you can be restored from your today and readied for your tomorrow.

One of our favourite, (and dare we say, the easiest!) and most cost effective ways to uplift the home & spirit is a scented candle.  Have you noticed when you walk into a home with a beautiful scented candle burning how you feel comforted, almost instantly?  It's like a hug wrapping around each and every one of our senses.


The scents can be mesmerising, bringing waves of cherished memories and positive emotions that uplift us into a state of relaxation. After a stressful day, we can finally feel relaxed with the help of a simple flame. Yes please!!  It can't just be me - but I feel many of us have been burning more candles than we ever have before.

According to psychotherapist, Chryssa Chalkia (CBT & Counsellor (UKCP, BABCP & BACP)

"Our sense of smell is incredibly powerful and shouldn’t be underestimated.  The smell of the scented candle stimulates the part of your brain which is connected to memory and mood.  From boosting energy through to relieving stress or even enhancing mental clarity, the healing properties coming from a lighted scented candle can deliver psychological effects."

A study conducted by Keville and Green (2009) reports that imbalances of psychological wellbeing such as depression can be improved with the use of scented candles and oils.  For example, certain scented candles can help reduce feelings of fear and anxiety, reducing stress and lifting mood."

It can be hard to know where to begin when it comes to picking a scented candle - with so many beautiful aroma's and designs it can be a little overwhelming to know what is worth investing in.


There are some
important considerations to make when selecting a scented candle, especially if you are wanting to reap the rewards that go beyond just smelling pretty.  By understanding the various scents available and the affect these have on our mental and physical health, you can pick the right candle for you (or a loved one!)
